Using the National Occupational Classification

The National Occupational Classification (NOC) enables economists, statisticians and analysts a consistent method to collect data and describe and understand the nature of work.

It provides individuals and career guidance personnel a standardized language for describing the work performed by Canadians in the labour market.  It organizes over 30,000 job titles into 520 occupational group descriptions.

The NOC is developed and updated in partnership with Statistics Canada according to their 5-year Census cycles. The NOC is based on extensive occupational research and consultations conducted across the country, reflecting the evolution of the Canadian labour market.

The two currently used data bases are NOC 2006 and NOC 2011.

The NOC can be used for:
  • defining and collecting statistics;
  • managing information databases;
  • analyzing labour market trends; and
  • extracting practical career planning information.
